Dear All,
As you all know as part of IYA 2009, one of the activity proposed is 100 hours of astronomy.
Bangalore Astronomical Society would like to conduct 100 hours of astronomy, with your support to reach more people around Bangalore and outside.
What is 100 hours of astronomy ?
between 1st April ( we are starting one day in advance ;) ) - 5th April. We will get as many telescopes as possible and keep them for public observation.
we plan to achieve a cumulative of 100 hours of telescope observation. ( its simple.. say there are 10 telescopes operating 2 hours a day for 5 days = 100 hours )
What can you do ?
If you have a telescope, then you can place that telescope outside your house.. area.. colony and get people around to peep thro the telescope.
keep a count of approximately how many people visited.
repeat this for all 5 days and send us the report ( total number of telescope observation hours and total number of people )
if you don't have a telescope you can still find some BAS member who owns a telescope and join them for the program.

It is a great idea! It reminded me of my hobbies which became forgotten under the pressure of work. As for me I've been always fond of Astronomy. At school I often observed the sky with a telescope. Now I don't have such an opportunity but I watch a lot of documentaries. There are lots of interesting ones at rapidshare SE http://rapidpedia.com .

Naveen, you have suggested, I along with my brother and mother conducted 100 hours of astronomy. It was a small event. On 4th,5th,& 6th night, we called our neighbours and friends on our terrace. I had pointed the telescope at the moon. One by one, they all gazed at the moon admiring the view. There were many craters on the moon. Some of them asked a few questions about astronomy out of curiosity.
There were about 30 people who came and looked through our telescope. I kept my telescope pointed at the moon for 3 hours and then showed them saturn (along with its rings and one moon) and orion nebula for one hour.
After this small event, many people developed interest and asked me many questions on astronomy. I told thenm about B.A.S and they were interested. Overall, everybody liked this event.

Location:: HAL 2nd Stage ,Near 100 Ft Road ,Indiranagar
Time:: 7:00 pm till 10:00 pm
People Attendance:: 180
Objects Shown:: Saturn,Moon,Orion Nebula,Ursa Major,Sirius
Equipment::6 inch reflector, 12mm and 25 mm eyepiece,f/8
Description:: We set the telescope up at about 6:45pm and got it ready for people to come and view. But due to the heavy light pollution and number of vehicles passing by many people were not stopping by to see the objects. We had to move the telescope quite a bit to show it to the people. Obviously it was not the right place to show it so we changed the location to an parallel road to the 100 ft road where there was a only a little amount of light pollution and then we started inviting people to see the objects. We couldn’t get many people mainly because there were no children and so the crowd wasn’t large but slowly but steadily people started watching over. Over a period of 3 hours we showed it to people in groups so we had about 180 people turning up for the event. There were a lot of things we learnt from it so that we do not do the mistake again.

Time:: 7:00 pm till 9:30 pm

Equipment::6 inch reflector, 12mm and 25 mm eyepiece,f/8
Details:: We set up the telescope in a dark location in front of a tech park on the inner ring road connecting Koramangla.We had some IT professionals going home from work so we managed to get some people to see moon and Saturn . It was hard to get the people because they had to come to a place a little far away from the main gate as we didn’t have permission to keep it in the park premises so we couldn’t get large crowds to see the spectacle. We got a very low response for the event but we were happy that we got some IT professionals to see what the sky holds.

Location:: Central Park,National Games Village
Time:: 7:00 pm till 9:30 pm
People Attendance:: 345
Objects Shown:: Saturn,Moon,Betelguese,Orion Nebula,Ursa Major,Scorpio,Sirius
Equipment::6 inch reflector, 12mm and 25 mm eyepiece,f/8
Details:: We executed this location as a planned event.We approached the NGV club to seek permission to place the Telescope in the Games Villlage so that we can get a good audience for the from the 2000 people who stay there.We had to take permission from the club secretary and Naveen did a fantastic job of finalizing the location even with permission constraints.As planned we reached NGV by 6:30 and set up the telescope on a platform in the central park which is excellent location for viewing .With about 100 people anytime present in the park the job of getting people becomes easy.
As soon as we set up the telescope within 5 minutes the children got interested and came running to us saying we are interested ,please show us the moon and not to mention there was a line of about 30 children from the grounds ready to experience the sight.It was extremely difficult to contain the children as they were touching the telescope and pulling out the eyepiece but the crowd didn’t stop coming.The children were followed by their parents and when the parents can we started feeling the number growing.One resident of NGV got his own Celestron Reflector and asked us to configure it to see the moon so now we had 2 telescopes and crowds flocking around.So many questions were flowing around ,I didn’t have time to even manage the line.Some questions people were asking
How to identify constellations?
How did the craters form on the moon?
Where is pole star?
Can we see Saturn’s Moons?
What is a Nebula?What are Red Giants?
People were keeping on coming and not only the park but the people staying in the nearby buildings started getting their loved ones to see the show. People started taking photos of us and the telescopes. We also started showing some tips of prime focus photography to the people which made them very interested. Many people started giving us business cards explaining their interest.Still we could have done much better if we had more telescopes. We didn’t stop there ,I removed my 10X50 binocs and showed them Orion Nebula and they were so interested in seeing it that all of them shifted their attention to watching through the binoculars. It was a fantastic event of explaining and showing. Even at 9:30 people were continuously coming but the park had to close so we had to wind up.
So we finally had a successful event at National Games Village and this event helped us learn a lot about what to show to people, what to explain and how to manage large audiences. BAS looks forward to do many more outreaches to embed the interest of astronomy in the minds of the people.
