Amateur Astronomy Workshop 2010

Bangalore Astronomical Society organised amateur astronomy workshop and about 55 participants were registered. A program which run for two day, covering various aspects of amateur astronomy. This workshop was mainly organised to share the learning BAS members had over the period of years. Workshop was organised in short notice but the participants made it a huge success and with all the positive feedback we have received about the workshop, we will come back soon with many more such events.

Thanks for our guests and Amateur Astronomers Prakash (ABAA) and Subramani (ABAA) for their kind support and participating in the workshop. I would like to thank, National college Jayanagar management for renting us the seminar hall,  all BAS volunteers  ( Vivek, Achyut, Gautham, Ravi, Viswa, Amar, Udayan, Pavan K)  for their hard work in organizing and support.

Thanks for Sunil G for writing a good report about the workshop.

Looking forward for many more such workshops and participation.

Messier Marathon - 2010 report

The Messier Marathon for BAS was actually destined to be a successful one. We specifically exerted ourselves in some aspects which as you will realize after reading, we broke some of our own records.

Inspite of having a very thick layer of haze since morning until reaching our observing site @ Koratgere (30km North off Tumkur Road NH-4), which actually negatively drowned our spirit, it slowly cleared as the Sun snoozed into the darkness. By then we had a simply clear blue sky, with very little thin haze lingering. I simply acknowledge this favorism to the grateful forces of Nature, very thankfully. But, by midnight sky conditions improved pretty much, and they were not steady throughout the night. Later on, we were actually observing through some lot of background glow, contribution attributed to the adjacent major town!

IYA2009 Galilean Nights awards

IYA2009 Galilean Nights awards

The IYA2009 Cornerstone project Galilean Nights ran during October 2009 and saw thousands of individuals and organisations host a wide range of events to popularise astronomy and highlight the importance of Galileo's legacy. Now that event reports have been collated the Galilean Nights awards can be announced. There are six categories, each with a winner and two highly commended entries.

Highest attendance at a single registered event

Winner: “Exposição de Telescópios” run by Clube de Astronomia de Brasília, Brazil. More than16 500 people observed Jupiter and its moons with their own eyes over the course of seven days. http://www.galileannights.org/events/reports/gn835.pdf

Highly commended: “Cosmic Landscape”, Brazil. This public exhibition was held at the biggest shopping mall in Maceió (Brazil), and was swamped with 15,000 attendees. http://www.galileannights.org/events/reports/gn665.pdf

REPORT: Outreach @ Parikrama School,Jayanagar

This event was a part of BAS's public education and outreach programme. The event was held on the 31st of January 2010 at the Parikrama School,Jayanagar.

The first thing we noticed about the students at the Parikrama school are they are all unexpectedly brilliant, in fact they are probably better thinkers than many of us , when we were at that age .

The outreach event  began at around 7.30 pm with a very unusual Questions session , it was only later that we got to explain to them about the night sky and about the various scientific phenomena associated with it.It would be rather  unfair,i think ,  if i do not stress on the inquisitiveness of the children , the type of questions they ask and the very way they think have in fact surprised both me and Gautham.

During the session we covered  the red planet -  Mars, the moon , the Pleiades cluster and the Orion nebula . All of which was showcased through the BAS 6" telescope and needless to say the kids enjoyed it.

It would be nice to have another interaction with them some time .

REPORT : Coorg Star Party - Nov 2009

This report has been long overdue .Besides considering the high quality of the Star Party , it is but apt that the event be reported despite the delay.

The Coorg Star party at Keemalee Estates held in the month of November 2009 has to be amongst the best star parties that we have had. The Quality skies and the prestiness of  Estate have greatly contributed to the success of the Trip. This Star party was the first of the Observing season and many people had their hopes attached to this one ,especially after a long cloudy monsoon.

Twelve of us left Bangalore in a Tempo Traveller on 20th of November 2009 ,our destination-Keemalee Estates in the Kodagu district. Although we did have a delayed start , we managed to reach the place in time. The Kemalee Estates – located in the the vicinity of Virajpete , is truly a divine place. With a large bungalow ,built in traditional Kodava style, and an array of  Dorms. ,it provided the ideal accommodation  for all of  us.

Valentines Day @ VBO, Kavalur! Observing report - 13th Feb '10

Wow! What an event! The star party on the night of 13th February 2010 has, for everyone -- surely for me -- etched memories in our personal lives. A respectable collaboration between Professionals (Indian Institute of AstroPhysics) and Amateurs, it was one of the best and biggest star parties in South India, at Vainu Bappu Obvservatory @ Kavalur -- the people, the equipment, the observations and moreover the prestigious location! Further, what a way it was to romanticize with the Stars, prior to Valentine's Day, for us Nature Lovers! :-)
